Three levels of prevention preventive medicine (psm)

Preventive medicine focuses on preventing diseases before they occur. It is divided into three levels of prevention:

1. Primary Prevention (Preventing Disease Before It Occurs)

  • Vaccination (e.g., flu shots, childhood immunizations)
  • Healthy lifestyle (balanced diet, exercise, avoiding smoking & alcohol)
  • Sanitation & hygiene (clean water, handwashing)
  • Health education (awareness campaigns on nutrition, mental health)
  • Environmental measures (reducing pollution, workplace safety)

2. Secondary Prevention (Early Detection & Treatment)

  • Screenings & check-ups (blood pressure, cancer screening, diabetes tests)
  • Early diagnosis (identifying diseases in the early stages)
  • Regular medical exams (physical exams, dental check-ups)
  • Lifestyle modifications (managing pre-diabetes, controlling cholesterol)

3. Tertiary Prevention (Managing & Reducing Impact of Disease)

  • Rehabilitation programs (physical therapy after a stroke)
  • Chronic disease management (diabetes, heart disease)
  • Medication adherence (following prescribed treatment plans)
  • Surgical interventions (to prevent further complications)
  • Mental health support (counseling for chronic illness patients)

Each level of prevention helps in reducing healthcare costs and improving quality of life. Would you like more details on any specific aspect?
